New Church

Death again took our Pastor. Father Butterbach died in 1960 and was succeeded by Father McCormick. In 1969 Father Reynolds was assigned as our Pastor.

By this time our Parish had seriously outgrown our little church. Six masses were said on the weekends to accommodate everyone. In 1971 Bishop Fletcher authorized Father Reynolds to begin planning for a new structure. Ed Drimmel and Associates designed the building. Ground was broken in March 1972 and construction preceded over the next 8 months with dedication of the new church on the Feast of Christ the King, Nov 26, 1972.

Initially the church displayed a tapestry behind the altar. This expressed the triune God, with Christ represented by a fish in the first of 3 circles; the Holy Spirit represented by a flame in the middle circle; and God the Father represented as an eye in the top circle. A crown at the top calls attention to Christ the King.

The tapestry and windows were designed by Robert Hartman of Arcadia, Missouri.

With the fall of South Vietnam in April 1975, a large number of Vietnamese fled to this country. Many were resettled through Fort Chaffee and stayed in the Fort Smith area. Among those arriving at Fort Chaffee was Father Dominic Dinh Luong, who ministered to the Vietnamese Community who joined Christ the King parish.
